How many years have you been in the industry?
I have been in the real estate industry for roughly 25 years, and I have been lucky enough to have had a variety of roles and by consequence, perspectives on how this industry has evolved.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone entering CRE?
My advice for someone entering commercial real estate investment is to actively seek a broad set of experiences across the industry. Commercial real estate is multifaceted, encompassing various property types, investment strategies, and market dynamics. To gain a comprehensive understanding and enhance your skill set, explore different roles, from asset management to leasing, property management, and deal analysis. This diverse experience will not only broaden your knowledge base but also help you identify your strengths and interests within the real estate landscape. Additionally, at TA Realty, I have learned how valuable it is to be part of a collaborative team. Being able to gain insights, mentorship opportunities, and a holistic perspective on the market, from up, down and across an organization will make you a more adaptable and knowledgeable investor in the long run.
What’s your favorite thing about real estate?
My favorite thing about working in real estate investment research is the opportunity to uncover hidden patterns and trends that drive strategic decision-making. I enjoy synthesizing data, assessing values, and identifying potential opportunities for growth. The ever-evolving nature of the real estate market keeps me on my toes, and I appreciate the continuous learning and adaptation required to stay ahead. I find the most rewarding aspects of working in real estate research are the combination of analytics, market insight, and contributing to informed decision-making that not only enhances the success of investments but can also play a crucial role in shaping the built environment and local communities.
Why do you find ULI valuable?
I find ULI membership highly valuable for several reasons. First, being part of this global organization provides access to a vast network of professionals and experts across nearly every field that touches urban development, real estate, and land use planning. I find this network incredibly valuable for the connections, knowledge exchange, and collaborative opportunities, for both personal and professional growth. In addition, ULI has a wealth of resources, including research reports, case studies, and industry insights, that I often rely on for insight on current trends.
What are you reading, watching, or listening to now?
My current favorite podcast is Moody’s Analytics’ “Inside Economics”. The podcast is a deep dive into the U.S. economy that might not be everyone’s cup of tea due to its lengthy discussions and in-depth exploration of data and macro-level trends. What sets it apart, though, is its unique blend of data and humor. Mark Zandi, the host, manages to inject a sense of levity into complex economic subjects, making it surprisingly engaging and even entertaining. While the content may be dense, the podcast’s lighthearted approach ensures that it remains intriguing, offering a unique perspective on economic analysis that appeals to those with a penchant for both depth and a good economist joke.
