Member Spotlight: Jordan Zimmerman, Tenant Design & Coordination Manager, New England Development
Jordan discusses the advice she would give new architects, the ULI Boston Climate Resiliency Committee which she co-chairs, and more.
How many years have you been in the industry?
I have been working in the industry for 13 years. I started my career in architecture in Memphis, TN, while making a plan for graduate school. After receiving a Masters in Architecture from Washington University in 2010, I moved to Boston. I worked for Perkins+Will and Arrowstreet on many projects and sectors, including Higher Education, Office, Residential, and Hospitality. I have been at New England Development since 2019, where I am the only licensed architect, working on a variety of projects and properties across the NED portfolio.
What motivates you?
I have always been motivated by the teams and process of delivering successful projects. I enjoy the collaboration between all of the expertise and experiences required to address unique project challenges. No project is a repeat, although I have been lucky to work with some people multiple times, so there is always something to learn and new challenges to tackle.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone entering CRE?
Specific to the Architecture route within the CRE, my advice is that success in this industry is so much more than what you learn in design school. Good design can change lives, impact health & wellness, reduce pollution, among other benefits, and has to be paired with organized project management, balance of priorities related to budget, constant learning and thoughtful collaboration with all who are involved.
What’s your favorite thing about real estate?
I love impacting our environment and the experience we have in Boston specifically.
What’s your biggest career accomplishment?
Probably juggling a family with a successful career. It is not easy and I am grateful to opportunities that have allowed me to grow personally and professionally at the same time. I have worked with supportive colleagues and leaders who understand that I am dedicated to the work, will meet deadlines and need flexibility to balance my family as well. I believe I am a more creative, effective leader because of that.
Why do you find ULI valuable?
ULI has been such an important connector to others in the industry that I may not have exposure to otherwise. We are making an effort on the Resiliency Committee this year for members to present their on-going work; it’s valuable to share our expertise within the group, on top of opportunities for more formal presentations and panels from outside sources that ULI connects us to.
What are you reading, watching, or listening to now?
My latest obsession is Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ podcast, Wiser Than Me.
