Tell us about your role and your firm.
I’m a tax partner in Boston office of CohnReznick LLP, a national advisory, assurance and tax firm with nearly 4,000 global team members and 29 locations. I concentrate on real estate-related tax consulting and planning as a partner. I’m responsible for many things, including maintaining and developing client relationships. Continuously learning and staying up to date on tax law and planning opportunities, and also a big part of the job is training and developing staff to support the growth firm.
How many years have you been in the industry?
I’ve been in public accounting industry for 23 years and concentrating in real estate for about 17 years.
What motivates you?
What drives me the most is providing for my family; I think it’s probably my biggest motivating factor. But I also enjoy the work, including consulting on transactions, developing creative solutions and helping clients work through problems and issues and come up with alternatives.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone entering the field?
The biggest piece of advice that I continue to give people is to learn as much as you can; set up time each week to dedicate to learning and developing, to reading industry-related articles, research issues, and anything that might give you ideas to grow personally in your own career.
What’s your favorite thing about working in the real estate industry?
In the real estate industry, there’s just so many different opportunities for tax planning and strategy. Tax law really favors the real estate industry. Real estate effects almost every other industry. We have clients in residential, retail, lab, industrial, hospitality, energy- you name it. You know there’s some aspect of real estate involved in all of these, and you really get to see a lot of different industries working in real estate.
What’s your biggest career accomplishment?
My biggest career accomplishment was making partner at CohnReznick. It was a lot of work and took a lot of dedication, and it was definitely worth it.
What are you reading, watching, or listening to now?
I’m reading a lot of tax articles! I do that on a weekly basis to try to stay up-to-date. Coming out of tax season, I haven’t been watching anything new- I’m just catching up on other things.
What are you looking forward to?
We’re really looking forward to getting back on the boat. I’m hoping for a great fishing season. We have a small boat and hopefully we get to go out on it a lot if the weather cooperates; it’s not always easy to plan.
What’s on the horizon for the Boston office of CohnReznick?
Our Embrace the Movement Live event is occurring Thursday June 8 from 5:30 – 7:30 PM at Industrious Seaport. We will be livestreaming our real estate focused thought leadership series and are having a cocktail reception to commemorate the event.
