Last month, we had a fantastic day exploring Lowell led by speakers who helped showcase the city’s rich history and exciting present. We kicked off with Yovani Baez-Rose from the City of Lowell sharing the history of planning in Lowell followed by Abby Goldenfarb of Trinity Financial and Matthew Marotta and Kendra Halliwell of ICON Architecture presenting on the Hamilton Canal District. Joshua Trearchis of VHB then led a mini tour of Thorndike Street, highlighting the transformative redesign that improved connectivity between the MBTA station and downtown. Next, we explored the Hamilton Canal District further with a tour of the newly completed mixed-use 201 Canal project, led by Adam Stein of WinnCompanies and Matthew Marotta of ICON Architecture.

Over lunch Yovani Baez-Rose presented on the City of Lowell’s designation as the first Frontrunner City in the US by the Urban Economy Forum and the exciting work ahead! In the afternoon the Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership hosted us in their new office in the recently completed Acre Crossing project as speakers Steven Joncas and Cathy Mercado presented on the project and its’ impact in providing affordable home ownership condo opportunities.

Our final tour stop before closing with a happy hour was a visit to a future site of the Merrimack Corridor Development where speakers Michael Lozano of Trinity Financial and Matthew Marotta and Kendra Halliwell of ICON Architecture shared the project’s exciting vision to create 118 affordable homes.
