Housing, Transportation, Resiliency and Land Use are on the Agenda when 6,000 Real Estate Experts Gather in Boston

 

Boston, Mass. – (October 3, 2018) – The Urban Land Institute’s Boston/New England District Council will host the real estate industry’s largest global gathering of city builders and land use experts at ULI Fall Meeting, October 8-11, 2018 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. 6,000 real estate professionals and public officials will examine critical issues around commercial development and land use. ULI is a global, multidisciplinary, member-driven real estate organization dedicated to responsible land use and building thriving, sustainable communities.

 

Among the topics of local interest:

  • Transit-Oriented Development – 3 major Boston transit stations – North, South, and Back Bay, as well as the Haymarket T station and busway – are all undergoing, or about to embark on, major development. Can Boston’s transit system handle the huge increase in Bostonians living here because of the boom in residential development?  How will these projects impact the overall building footprint of Boston? What does this mean for continued mixed-use development?

 

  • Coastal Resiliency – Superstorms are threatening coastal communities and changing how developers approach new building. Leaders in climate change, coastal development and land use come together to discuss the best ways to combat the problem and protect our coasts.

 

  • Modular Housing in Boston – Is modular housing the solution to Greater Boston’s affordable housing crisis? A new modular development, The Graphic, is about to open in Charlestown—featuring 170 apartment units, retail and recreational space. The architect and contractor behind this project will discuss the design and construction process, perceptions of modular product, and pros and cons of off-site fabrication.

 

  • “Missing” Middle Class Housing – Boston ranks among the least affordable cities for middle class home ownership. Developers are challenged to create new homes that working families can buy. Hear from builders who have successfully built nonsubsidized, medium-density housing oriented to middle-class Americans. How can their experience affect Boston’s future?

 

  • The release of the 2019 edition of Emerging Trends in Real Estate – the widely anticipated annual industry forecast co-published by ULI and PwC includes rankings of the best (and worst) markets for investment and development, including Greater Boston. The results will be released at a media-only lunch on Wednesday, October 10.

 

  • Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and Massachusetts Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Jay Ash will discuss working across party lines to achieve successful development projects in Boston on Tuesday October 9 at 4:00 p.m.
