By Chloe Louise Bouscaren, Client Development Director, NBBJ
Chloe discusses the thrill of pursuing and landing new clients, what makes a high-performing team, and vibrant CRE networks in Boston.
How many years have you been in the (commercial real estate) industry?
I have been working in the CRE industry as a marketing and client development professional for 15+ years on the architecture and design side. My current role is Client Development Director at NBBJ in our Boston Studio.
What motivates you?
My NBBJ team on game day. A pitch, an introductory meeting, a new project interview, a lead?! I am motivated by understanding our clients’ fears and challenges and working with my design teams to find a solution to support them. I love the theater of an interview and, at NBBJ, I am fortunate to be supported by a talented group of marketing and graphic designers.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone entering CRE?
Meet as many people as possible. Broaden your network. Go to educational events and learn about your City. Join ULI and a committee. I joined the YLG Committee when I first began my career and many of those same people are either good friends or business partners now. Shout out to my ULI NEXT District Council (I served as a Chair). I have also been a member of NAIOP, serving on the Programs and Education Committee, PWC Boston (Professional Women in Construction) where I both served on the Board of Directors and chaired the Membership Committee, and am a long-standing member of SCUP (Society of College and University Planners).
What’s your favorite thing about real estate?
Our CRE community here in Boston is so strong. I have developed some truly meaningful relationships over the years, and I know those folks will always lend a hand to help out and support me. Having an open mind loans itself to finding common ground and making a connection. I also love the energy around a new project, a site walkthrough, a kickoff meeting. The team is genuinely trying to do the right thing together – and ultimately, it is teamwork and strong communication skills will result in a high-performing team and successful delivery.
What’s your biggest career accomplishment?
I have now been with NBBJ for almost 10 years – a decade! And together we have grown our commercial and commercial science teams putting NBBJ on the map as a true competitor in the marketplace, most recently having completed Moderna’s HQ for Alexandria Real Estate, and are now delivering 55 Summer Street, a 10-story lab conversion project in Downtown Boston for Phase 3 Real Estate, and 420 Rutherford Avenue, a modestly handsome lab and office building in Charlestown Hood Park for Related Beal. I am so proud of my teams, the leadership at NBBJ, and our commitment to delivering smart, high-performing, healthy buildings in Boston, Cambridge and beyond.
What are you looking forward to?
Summer in New England is a gift and a great season to be outdoors. I always look forward to ocean swims and mountain hikes in Acadia with family and friends.
I have some travel plans too! I will be in New Orleans for the first time for a friend’s wedding… and I have a few great concerts on the calendar too – including Dead & Co. at the Sphere in Las Vegas.
As a UVM alum and lover of all things Vermont, I try to get up to Burlington, VT and Mad River Valley as much possible to visit my friends and goddaughter.
Bolton Valley, Stowe and Sugarbush are favorite spots to visit… and Frankie’s in Burlington for a nice dinner out.
