    The U.S. electric power sector is changing in both challenging and exciting ways. Among the factors influencing this evolution are:

    • The growth of renewable energy sources, and the decentralization of power generation into more distributed energy resources;
    • Technological improvements in energy storage, communications, sensors and controls;
    • Clean energy and climate goals driving efficiency improvements as well as renewables adoption
    • Increasing need for resilience, from climate change, terrorism, etc.;
    • Changes in electric rate structures opening the door– and increasing the imperative – to find new ways for building owners and operators to save money.

    Join ULI Boston and our panel of experts as we discuss the challenges and opportunities of high performance districts and grid efficient buildings.

    Speakers

    Panelist

    Shanti Pless

    Senior Research Engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory

    Shanti joined the Commercial Building Research Group at NREL in 1999 with a focus on applied research and design processes for commercial building energy efficiency and building integrated renewable energy. This work has included facilitating numerous integrated design processes and energy modeling teams needed to realize cost-effective zero-energy commercial buildings. He is leading the development of the next round of Advanced Energy Design Guides and managing the Whole Buildings Systems Integration section of the group. Shanti has written more than 50 journal articles, industry publications, guidebooks, and technical reports related to energy efficiency and zero-energy buildings, with frequent national keynote speaking experience at industry conferences such as Greenbuild, AIA, and ASHRAE. He was awarded an ASHRAE Technology Award in 2013 for NREL's large-scale zero-energy Research Support Facility. Education B.S. Mechanical Engineering, Alfred University

    Panelist

    Geoff Gunn

    Associate Principal, Arup

    Geoff leads Arup’s work in distributed energy, EV planning and energy resilience in Arup’s Boston office where he is both the Electrical Engineering and Energy Business Leader. He has led the design of numerous solar photovoltaic systems and other renewable, and distributed, energy systems, such as CHP, fuel cells, battery energy storage, demand response, and microgrids. He has performed energy resilience assessments and provided electrical design to enhance resilience. Geoff has electrification and grid interconnection experience in a range of projects, including transit providers, campus facilities, zero net energy buildings, data centers, educational facilities, and hospitality.

    Panelist

    Christina McPike

    Director of Energy & Sustainability, WinnCompanies

    Christina McPike is the Director of Energy & Sustainability at WinnCompanies, a 50-year-old multifamily housing owner, developer, and manager. Since joining Winn’s Energy & Sustainability team in 2013, Ms. McPike has managed over $30 million worth of energy efficiency upgrades across Winn’s portfolio. Under Ms. McPike’s leadership, WinnDevelopment successfully integrates high performance design in every project, from occupied moderate renovations to historic adaptive reuse projects to ground up new construction.
